Cork Jazz Festival returns with a bang down on Cornmarket Street – this year we bring you Live at the Cornmarket Bowl! all shows free all weekend long!
Friday night we welcome the wonderful Quangodelic from 9pm followed by the one and only DJ Fadd Jnr til late
Quangodelic are a huge Funk ensemble based in Cork City comprised of anywhere between 8-18 players united by a love of funk and fun.
As their name suggests, they are heavily influenced by the music and
approach of Parliament Funkadelic. But they are very much their own beast and are a truly unique act: you won’t find
anything like them in Ireland. As well as a heaving set of original funk
songs, Quangodelic introduce a smattering of covers from legends including Chuck Brown, The Pointer Sisters and The Commodores. eminently danceable and massive fun, Quangodelic know how to bring the party. Featuring: Derek O’Connor, Paul Dunlea, Dave Redmond, Cormac
McCarthy, Tomas Gall & Guests
Derek O’Connor or ‘Doc’ as he’s known to the music world has continually
refined and expanded his talents as a solo artist whilst establishing an elite reputation as one of Irelands finest Saxophone players and as a first-
call sideman for some of the worlds major artists. Derek has toured, performed and recorded around the world with Paul Brady, Van Morrison, Chaka Khan, Wet Wet Wet, Bob Geldof, Imelda May, Andrew Strong, Heartbeat of Home, and Jeffrey Osborne to name but a few.
He has worked with many of Irelands top country, pop and rock stars
and also can be seen on Irish television every Friday night on the long
running popular TV show called ‘The Late Late show’ playing
piano and saxophone as part of the house band called the Camembert
Quartet.
Saturday 6pm Christiana Underwood Band
Christiana Underwood performs a selection of artists that have influenced her musical journey. Join her and band as they take you from the 70s right through to the modern day era. It’ll be a night of sultry and soulful music.
SKAZZ: This five piece started out as a swing and jazz outfit and
converted in early 2007 to pure Ska vibes. In keeping with their jazz roots,
Skazz have chosen the original Jamaican scene Ska of the 1960’s – when
Caribbean mento and calypso first met American jazz and rhythm and
blues. Having already shared stages with the likes of The Skatalites,
Prince Buster, The Pioneers, and Syramip, and performing regularly at the
Cork Jazz Festival since 2009 and Electric Picnic, they are the resident
band of the Doonbeg Jazz Festival. They have also played Trier Jazz
Festival (Germany), Bray Jazz ,Townlands Carnival, Ted Fest , Fest Valle
Luna (La Gomera Spain) and countless other events . The strong brass
section leads the way with tenor sax and trumpet ably backed by a tight
rhythm section and skanking guitar riffs . Their music is happy, lively and
will have you up and dancing ! They look forward to returning to this years
Cork Jazz 2021. Followed by DJ Val til Late
Sunday from 3pm Derek ‘Doc’ O’Conor’s Quintet is back to get us back in the groove!
From 6pm the wonderful Belleville Hot Club return to our stage move the party into full swing!
Belleville Hot Club are a group of London based jazz musicians who
together recreate the vibe and atmosphere of the swing jazz period.
Combining the sounds and spirit of Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grappelli
and the Hot Club of France, the Belleville Hot Club’s repertoire ranges
from Dixieland classics to popular jazz standards… something for every Jazz Fan
Hometown heroes the Art Crimes Band join us on Sunday evening from 9:15
Founded in 2011 and hailing from Cork City, Ireland and USA, The Art Crimes Band signed to the Californian based SUGO Music Group record label in 2014 and launched their debut album of original material entitled ‘Radio’ at the Cork Jazz Festival in 2015. The group have gigged extensively together for a decade and have included very popular ventures into the world of Burlesque with International burlesquer and model extraordinaire Foxy P. Cox taking them as far as Portugal and beyond. With a new year came new beginnings and in January 2021 the group released their first single of the new year with the soulful ‘In The Dark Of The Evening’ on all streaming platforms to much fanfare and their follow up single “Guy Like You” is slated for release in November. Llewelyn Screen of A&R Factory states “The Art Crimes Band make that type of music that hugs you close and doesn’t let go”.
